I had other examples to draw from. I can remember when the warehouse district in Houston was a wreck. Montrose began to gentrify too much for the artistic community to continue living there. Some of the artists moved into empty warehouses, converted them into lofts and studios. From the outside looking in, and looking across the years, it may seem like they went in to gentrify the warehouse district. People who moved in after them did that. but only after the artists had made the area livable. The artists weren't trying to gentrify the area to exploit it. They just needed an inexpensive place to live with enough space to create their artwork.
A one-step uplift needs a lot of money from government or deep-pocketed developers. The Montrose, the warehouse district and the Heights in Houston didn't uplift that way. It was the same type of multi-step uplift that I had a piece of in a small place in New Hampshire, but Houston's was on a big-city scale. I guess you could say I was just doing what I had seen other people do.
