A delightful post! The worst of the white race was also responsible for the near extinction of egrets and other birds for making their nuptial feathers and even whole bodies of songbirds into decor for ladies’ hats. It took a group of women to stop this horror. Our Mississippi kites in Oklahoma aren’t as colorful but we enjoy them. In fall they gather in some areas with the stunning swallowtail kites to feast on dragonflies and grasshoppers they catch and eat on the wing. So happy you and V enjoyed your beautiful red kites❤️
We've decimated so many species. There's another recovery project close to Ynyslas, the Dyfi Osprey Project. We'd like to visit someday, but we can't leave the dogs in the caravan (trailer) park and the Osprey Project is not an okay place to take them. Red kites have recovered more than ospreys so far. The Project says the UK was down to just one breeding pair in the mid-1950s and is now up to about 300. For comparison, that means there are only about as many ospreys in the entire UK as red kites in Wales. Someday we should leave the dogs at home and make a trip just to visit the Osprey Project. https://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/dyfi-osprey-project/all-about-ospreys
