And yes I am wary of becoming a conspiracy theorist but too much has been said and done. Too much coziness with Putin and enemies of democracy. Were the results rigged? If Musk and other operatives didn’t use their vast wealth and digital expertise to manipulate results, the hypnotic power of extreme disinformation was election interference at minimum and tampering at the highest level.
Legally, disinformation is seldom a crime. The results look strange to me, as though there's more to it than that--and as I said, it doesn't matter. We have no way of ever finding out whether the election was "fixed," as you-know-who put it. This is what we are stuck with.
I am so glad the UK votes the old fashioned way with tick marks on paper ballots.
Right on every point. But if Biden has the power to prevent the worst of this catastrophe he should use it. Dems need to grow a pair and do what it takes legally. The Supreme Court has given him a pass and he has only days left to implement defenses. To fail that is to fail us all.
This has been a thorough takeover. Even if Biden used the authoritarian powers SCOTUS added to the Presidency, I can't see a path that would sort this out. I can only see paths that would make it worse. There must be sharp minds looking for a way--he has a very good team. I hope they can see a path that I can't see.
The Jews in Nazi Germany did not resist or fight. Would it turned out differently if they had? Will we be too decent while the Indecency has its way? I am very very worried.
Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau once said “Living next to the Americans is like sleeping next to an elephant—no matter how friendly and even-tempered the elephant, one is affected by every twitch!” Canadians are very aware that what happens in the US affects Canada directly. We also have our own "Maple MAGA" in our Conservative opposition to the Liberals / our current prime minister Justin Trudeau (Pierre's son). It's likely Conservative Pierre Poilievre will win the next federal election. Interference in our election processes by India, China and Russia have already been proven. Conservatives have hosted actual AfD/Nazi members from Germany and our former PM Stephen Harper is head of the IDU, the International Democracy Union--an Orwellian misnomer--that counts Hungary's Orban amongst it's most successful members. While Trump was in power previously Justin Trudeau's government was able to mitigate some of his damaging actions, but I am fearful of what will happen when a Trump supporting Poilievre government is in power at the same time. Americans contemplating moving to Canada may find that things are pretty similar up here, soon. Strength and endurance to all.
I have not been watching Canadian politics as closely as I should. It's hard to find the bandwidth when my two countries are the UK and USA. Thank you for bringing Canadian perspective here--please continue!
As much as I hope Canada will be able to fend off what the USA did not, this is a political pandemic sweeping through country after country. Germany's governing coalition just collapsed, and the world is so distracted by the USA's election that hardly anyone seems to have noticed. Several countries in Europe have been grappling with this spreading wave of mindless rage.
We are *all* in a pickle. The immediate future is going to hurt.
P.S.--USA citizens hoping to flee to Canada should include tax consequences in the decision. Normally I wouldn't allow the tax tail to wag the dog. (That's obvious from the path I've taken.) But before I moved to the UK, I considered Canada. The total income tax burden on me would have gone no lower than 50%, no matter how little I earned. There was a complex, expensive way to avoid that for 5 years but not beyond 5 years. Check whether the situation has relaxed before moving from the USA to Canada.

We have already been too decent while indecency built itself up to where it is now. That's part of how we got here.
Everybody with an ounce of sense is very very worried--everywhere.
