Unfortunately the lust for power is considered God-given, if you're a Christian conservative, which most of the GOP claims to be. "The Family" documentary on Netflix, based on the book by the same name, helps explain how secretive Christian power brokers use some of the most corrupt people to "do God's work." Whatever "God" wants is what the GOP wants, and they will stop at nothing to get it. The Prince of Peace they purport to follow is too old-fashioned for today's entitled Christian Nationalists. It's so freaking terrifying.

Living where such people dominate the area is uncomfortable for someone like me who belongs to a group they like to target. I haven't seen the documentary you've mentioned, but living in Tennessee put me in the middle of it. Many of my coworkers in Chattanooga home-schooled their children specifically to keep the kids from being exposed to any ideas other than those of their parents and their church. Very much the family as the center of and censor of all information. Control the information and you've got control of the people.
