Geez. COVID vaccines were developed IN A YEAR. That usually takes several years at best. They aren't 100% effective, but it's exceedingly rare to get 100% effectiveness. They fight more against severe disease than against infection.
On a normal timeline we would still be waiting for any type of vaccine at all. We already have bivalent boosters, a second round of new vaccine releases.
Your last two sentences are very much on point. I would perhaps add that we have gotten spoiled to instant gratification from such things as the internet and the smartphone. Doing hard things requires focus and patience, which seem to be in short supply.
We owe so much to the space program. Heck, to airplanes for that matter. How do those things fly? :-)
