I plan to transform my neglected backyard into a native wildflower garden. Bought $300 worth of seeds. Now I need soil amendments and rockery edgings to keep the rain from washing everything away after I plant them in October. I'm always looking for gardening ideas.

Wasn't your dad a merchant marine captain? I bought the book - only $2.99 on Kindle

Both Grandpa and my father were merchant marine captains, at different times. My father sailed under Grandpa. That's how my mother met him. And thank you for getting the book. I hope you enjoy it!

Ah yes, favorite shoes. Especially important when one has wide feet. Comfortable replacements are hard to come by. Your grandfather with his house made of ribbed nails sounds like a character worthy of his own story. Oh and I’d love to see pix of your garden.

Separately... Not sure I can justify putting photos of our garden here. Might have to send you some privately.

Grandpa is worthy of his own story. He told it and it's published. A few years ago, on behalf of the family I went through his writings, pulled them together (with a few bits added by family members) and self-published. Anyone curious can find it at Amazon. "Seasoned with Sea Salt: The Life of Captain Barnie P. Bobbitt" (Some of our British friends stayed up way too late reading it.)
