From the moment Rishi Sunak called a general election for 4 July in the UK, the pace at which the Tories have been covering themselves in ignominy seems to have accelerated.
In the USA a substantial proportion of the population recognizes how dangerous the situation is. It all looks insane from over here, but the USA tends to be noisy and even violent about settling its biggest divisions so it's sort of to be expected.
In the UK being noisy about settling big divisions would go against the grain, and Britons take great pride in being able to put up with stuff that would raise an uproar from other people. We've been more like the frog in the pot that is slowly rising to a boil, putting up with more and more degradation of what was pretty good when I arrived here.
At long last it feels like the UK will toss out the people who have been ripping things up. I'm not clear about whether the next government will be as effective at starting to mend the damage as the current Administration in the USA has been.
In a few minutes I'll be heading out to a campaign office to do volunteer chores. I don't want to just stand around talking and donating a few quid here or there when this election is so important, so I've been going and doing a bit. I can't go doorknocking (my accent is entirely wrong for it) but there is always something that needs to be done.
Sad state of affairs in both our countries
Quite different in the two countries, though.
